| REVIEW ABOUT THE HOTEL DES ARTS PARIS |
|
Paris' two-
and three-star hotels are no longer the bargain they once were - I calculate
that their rates have risen by a third over the past six years. But
Europe's most popular city still has some very appealing, inexpensive
places to stay in, even in prime areas such as St-Germain-des-Prés.I've
picked out 10, eight of them at less than £100 a night for a double
room. Prices quoted are for the cheapest double in May (high season).
Unless otherwise stated, they are room only. In French hotels, breakfast
is normally optional and priced separately. Where this is the case,
I have given the per person breakfast price in the hotel's factual details
under the description. In Paris, it's often more pleasant, and almost
always cheaper, to have breakfast in a café instead. Selling points are the atmospheric Montmartre setting (a steep, cobbled side street, with a windmill at the top) and the paintings galore: the walls of the reception, sitting-room, basement breakfast room and corridors are covered in works by Montmartre artists, and one or two also appear in each bedroom. Otherwise, bedrooms are plain and a bit boxy, though some have recently been given jolly mosaic-tiled bathrooms. The cheapest (£66) rooms are interior-facing and gloomy. But many have great views right over Paris: those on the sixth (top) floor cost £93, while numbers 41 and 42 are the only two with a balcony. You may have to step over Caramel, the resident Labrador, to enter the hotel. 50 rooms; breakfast £5.50. 5, rue Tholozé, 75018; 0033 146 063052, www.arts-hotel-paris.com. |

5 rue Tholozé (18. Arr.), Metro 12, Station Abbesses; Metro 2, Blanche Tel. 0033/1/46 06 30 52, www.arts-hotel-paris.com. |

| All prices quoted are the lowest-available rates for a double or twin room per night - prices may be higher for bigger rooms and in peak periods. At the time of going to press, £100 was worth €152. - 21 janv 2007 | |
Hotel des Arts Montmartre Montmartre is the last village in Paris and you can feel it in this hotel, well away from the track beaten by hordes on their way up to the Sacre Cœur. That little plant-filled frontage on the steep narrow street is deceptive - the door opens onto a big reception space with all the ingredients of a personal welcome including Caramel, a big, friendly labrador. Rooms are a reasonable size and simple and uncluttered, some with views of secret gardens and rooftops and all with a sense of quiet comfort. All the paintings are by Montmartre artists and the basement breakfast area is almost a gallery - as well as displaying an excellent cold buffet. Great value. 5 rue Tholoze; 00 33 1 4606 3052. €95;breakfast €8 |

Doc: romantic Paris on the cheap? Q I would like to take my new girlfriend on a romantic weekend to Paris. Unfortunately, my budget for accommodation is a measly £60 per night. Is it possible to find a hotel that’s still romantic at that price? John Edwards, Cardiff A Hôtel des Arts (00 33-1 46 06 30 52, www.arts-hotel-paris.com),
in Montmartre, is perfect for the financially challenged suitor. Its
rooms are quite generous for a two- star property, unpretentiously furnished,
and some have wonderful views over the higgle-piggle of rooftops. One
nice touch is that all the paintings are by Montmartre artists, which
adds a certain je ne sais quoi. And it’s precisely on budget at
£60 a night (the views cost an extra £6 — oh, go on,
surely she’s worth it). Ten minutes away, near the Place de Clichy,
Hôtel Eldorado (01 45 22 35 21, www.eldoradohotel.fr) is very
bohemian. The rooms have quirky leopard prints and zebra stripes and
knick-knacks from Africa and Asia. It’s well within your price
range, with its best rooms costing about £50 |

| THE picturesque staircases and
winding streets of Montmartre have received a new lease of life thanks
to the popularity of recent films such as Amélie and Baz Luhrmann’s
Moulin Rouge. This hotel is located right in the middle of it all, on
a quiet street next to the historic windmills, Sacré Coeur and
the artists of Place du Tertre. The lobby of this old-fashioned hotel
features exposed stone walls and a small sitting room overlooking the
street, while the hotel’s 50 rooms are modern and have carpeted
floors, pale pastel walls, floral fabrics and en suite bathrooms with
shower or bath. They are all equipped with satellite TV, and wi-fi internet
access.
Details: Hôtel des Arts (46 06 30 52, www.arts-hotel-paris.com),
5 rue Tholozé, 18th. Doubles from £50; breakfast £4.80. |
