With Christmas fast approaching, the most beautiful European capitals don their clothes of light and Paris is no exception to this tradition. It’s a joy to visit Paris in December when the first snowflakes fall, the department stores are exquisitely decorated and the Marché de Noël des Abbesses (Abbesses Christmas Market) opens for your festive shopping pleasure. Ideally situated on the hill of Montmartre, the Hotel des Arts offers the ideal setting for your winter break in Paris.
The Abbesses Christmas market; discover Montmartre in a new light
Even today, Montmartre still has the languid feel and leisurely pace of a small village. This is not entirely surprising when you consider that the district did not become a part of the capital until the second half of the 19th century. Luxury shops are increasingly numerous now, but Montmartre remains a place of small, independent traders and delights Parisians and tourists alike with its various markets and fragrant bakeries. There’s no better way to spend a December afternoon than by admiring the view from the top of the hill of Montmartre before visiting the Sacré-Coeur Basilica and then heading down to the Place des Abbesses to enjoy the friendly atmosphere of its Christmas market.
An enchanting experience for young and old
The small wooden chalets grouped around the Abbesses Metro station, on the Place des Abbesses as well as along the Rue Lepic, display a diverse selection of craft items and festive decorations as well as gourmet products such as chocolates, fruit spreads and all kinds of tempting cold cuts. The Abbesses Christmas Market is a particularly great place to meet up with family or friends around a hot chocolate or a hot and spicy mulled wine when you need a break between shopping sessions.
