The Fête de la Musique returns on Saturday, June 21, 2025, with a huge lineup of free concerts happening all across Paris and the Île-de-France region.
But do you know the story behind the Fête de la Musique and how it all began? The festival was launched in 1982 on the initiative of the French Ministry of Culture. That year, the Ministry’s research and studies department conducted a major survey on French cultural habits. The results revealed that five million people—including one in two young people—played a musical instrument. This inspired Jack Lang, along with Christian Dupavillon (architect, scenographer, and member of his team) and Maurice Fleuret, to envision a large, popular event aimed at giving all musicians a chance to perform and be heard. The very first Fête de la Musique was held on June 21, 1982, a symbolic date marking the summer solstice.
